Moving closer to work: renting in the Geneva and Vaud region
4 min read · updated 20/10/2026
Rents vary a lot across French-speaking Switzerland. Choosing the right area, rather than only the right flat, is often the best way to stay within budget.
Compare areas, not just flats
Geneva and Lausanne are the tightest markets. Neuchâtel, La Chaux-de-Fonds and parts of Valais and Fribourg generally offer more space for the same budget. A short train ride from a big city can lower rents noticeably.
Each city page on ImmoLouer shows the median rent and price per m² calculated from listings currently online.
Think about the commute
The Léman Express links Geneva with its suburbs and neighbouring France, and regional trains connect the Lake Geneva towns. Check door-to-door travel time before applying.
Ending a lease
Swiss leases have fixed notice periods, usually at least three months for housing, often tied to specific end dates. You can leave earlier by proposing a solvent replacement tenant. See our guide on ending a lease (in French).
Frequently asked questions
